Skateboarder killed in Midtown hit-and-run; police arrest suspect moments later

A driver leaving the parking lot of a Midtown store hit and killed a woman who was skateboarding, then drove away, according to the Anchorage Police Department.

According to APD spokesperson Jennifer Castro, a green Ford Explorer was pulling out of the Barnes and Noble parking lot when it collided with the pedestrian, then left the scene. Based on witness reports, police said, they were able to track and locate the vehicle.

Man charged in hit-and-run death of skateboarder in Midtown Anchorage

Charles Carney Jr. was charged with leaving an accident without assisting an injured person, police said in a statement issued Saturday morning. Additional charges are possible, police said.

"It was reported that Carney exited his vehicle and walked back to Ms. Lamont as she lay on the ground, then reentered his vehicle and drove away," officials wrote in the charging documents.

Anchorage man charged with leaving scene of fatal accident

A 51-year-old Anchorage man was arraigned Saturday on a felony charge of leaving an accident without assisting an injured person.
A driver that was exiting a Barnes & Noble parking lot did not look to the left before pulling out and struck a skateboarder that was travelling on the sidewalk. The driver failed to stop and offer assistance, and the skateboarder died. Witnesses jotted down the license plate number of the car, and police were able to track the suspect to their house and arrest them.
