Man charged in deadly NC crash involving moped

Leahy is charged with felony death by vehicle and driving while impaired, among other charges.
At approximately 11:22 p.m. Friday, December 19, Robert Leahry was driving an Infiniti on Old Statesville Road when he rear-ended a moped which became lodged in the front of the car. The driver of the moped, Philip Black, 19, was critically injured and transported to Carolinas Medical Center. The passenger, Valerie Shaak, 22, was pronounced deceased at the crash site. According to law enforcement, Leahry reportedly drove about a mile before parking his vehicle and then fled on foot. He was found about a quarter mile away by K-9 and helicopter units. Leahry was transported to CMC-Main with minor injuries. He was released from the hospital and was charged with driving while impaired, no operator's license, 2 counts of felony hit and run, felony serious injury by vehicle, and felony death by vehicle.
