Crash in Waupaca County sends two to hospital by helicopter, another by ambulance

Just after 9 p.m. Wednesday, deputies received a report of a one-vehicle crash on Pufahl Road, north of Zabel Road in the town of Weyauwega.

A severe single-vehicle crash in rural Weyauwega, Wisconsin on Wednesday evening resulted in multiple injuries, including one person facing life-threatening conditions. According to the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the incident at 9:02 p.m. following reports of a crash on Pufahl Road north of its intersection with Zabel Road in the Town of Weyauwega. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and determined that multiple victims required immediate medical attention. The driver of the vehicle sustained the most severe injuries and was airlifted via Theda Star helicopter to Saint Vincent's Hospital in Green Bay with life-threatening injuries. One passenger with serious but non-life-threatening injuries was also transported by air to Theda Care Medical Center in Neenah. A third passenger was taken by ground ambulance to Theda Care Medical Center in Waupaca for treatment, while a fourth passenger was evaluated at the scene and released without requiring hospitalization.

Location and Infrastructure

Pufahl Road is a rural roadway in the Town of Weyauwega, located in eastern Waupaca County, approximately 35 miles west of Appleton. The stretch north of Zabel Road where the accident occurred is characterized by limited lighting and minimal traffic infrastructure typical of rural Wisconsin roadways. This area features predominantly agricultural surroundings with scattered residential properties and moderate curves that can be challenging to navigate, particularly after dark. The rural nature of this location means emergency response times may be longer than in more densely populated areas, though the proximity to multiple regional medical centers, including facilities in Waupaca, Neenah, and Green Bay, provides critical access to trauma care. The area is under the jurisdiction of the Waupaca County Sheriff's Office, which coordinates with local emergency medical services for incident response.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Wisconsin law, victims of single-vehicle accidents may have various legal recourse options depending on the circumstances. Wisconsin operates under a modified comparative negligence system, where injured parties can recover damages as long as they are not more than 50% at fault. Insurance claims must typically be filed promptly, with Wisconsin's statute of limitations allowing three years from the date of the accident to file personal injury lawsuits. Injured parties may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term disability. Passengers in the vehicle might have claims against the driver's insurance policy, particularly if negligence, such as distracted driving or excessive speed, contributed to the crash. Wisconsin also requires drivers to maintain minimum liability insurance of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident for bodily injury.
