Teen killed after being struck by train in Petersburg

Authorities say the teenager was walking on the railroad tracks in the path of an eastbound Norfolk Southern train with three locomotives and 16 rail cars. The train crew sounded a horn to alert the teen, who was reportedly wearing headphones, but the train could not stop in time.

"It was determined that the juvenile was walking on the train track and did not respond to emergency sirens. Although the investigation has not yet fully concluded, it is not expected that any charges will be filed against the conductors of the train. We extend our deepest sympathy to the families of everyone involved in the tragic accident. This is the second train accident in Petersburg this year and while the first incident did not result in a fatality, we remind the community be aware of the dangers of moving locomotives," Esther Hyatt, spokeswoman for Petersburg police said in a news release. Norfolk Southern Corp. spokeswoman Susan Terpay said Tuesday that De la Cruz was reported to have been wearing ear buds at the time of the accident and that the conductor sounded the train’s horn to alert the teen, but that the train was not able to stop in time.

Petersburg High School issued the following statement Wednesday: "Yesterday, one of our high school students, Henry De la Cruz, was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in his death. Grief counselors are available for students and faculty who may need to discuss this loss. Petersburg Schools extends our deepest condolences to Henry’s family, and our students and staff during this difficult time."

Petersburg family holds vigil to mourn 15-year-old's death

PETERSBURG, Va. -- A Petersburg family held a vigil for a 15-year-old boy, who was recently hit and killed by a train. The vigil for Henry De la Cruz was held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Police said De la Cruz was hit by the train Tuesday morning in the 2300 block of Buckner Street in Petersburg. The victim’s cousin, Sorina Montoa , said the family are still trying to come to grips with their loss. “I still can't believe it. I’m holding on to hope that he will walk inside the house, or he will text me asking where we are at, I can't believe it,” Montoa said.
