Numerous injuries as Caroline school bus overturns near high school

Samuel Bayer was at the scene shortly after the accident and says it appeared to have happened shortly before 3 p.m. He says the bus was still being evacuated and police and medical assistance were just arriving. He also spotted a white min-van with substantial damage to the front end in the southbound lanes, but it's unclear at this time whether it was involved in the crash.

A parent at the scene told 8News reporter Matthew McClellan that an altercation occurred shortly before the bus was side-swiped by another vehicle.

A photo sent in to NBC12 via Twitter showed the bus overturned on Route 207 Rogers Clark Boulevard outside the school. At this time, police have confirmed a crash but are offering no further information.

Virginia school bus overturns; 28 injuries reported

MILFORD, Va. (AP) - Authorities in Caroline County say 28 students have been injured when a school bus overturned after being struck by a van. The bus was carrying middle and high school students when it crashed around 3 p.m. WRIC-TV reports a van leaving Caroline High School was turning in front of the bus and struck it, causing the bus to flip over in a grassy area. Caroline County Sheriff Tony Lippa says 28 students were taken to area hospitals. He says five of those injuries were believed to be serious.
