Navy releases cause of fatal helicopter crash off Virginia Beach coast

The U.S. Navy has released the final investigation report for the MH-53E “Sea Dragon” helicopter that crashed off the Virginia Beach coast in January.

Report: Fire contributed to helicopter crash off VB

10 On Your Side is learning more about a Navy helicopter crash that killed three sailors off the coast of Virginia Beach back in January.

Fallen pilot remembered through truck restoration

For the last month, Snyder’s friends, co-workers from the squadron, and his teenage son, Brady, have been meeting in Paules’ garage to work on the truck. He said, somewhere around a dozen people have been involved in restoring and preserving the truck so far.

The helicopter was conducting tow training with another aircraft at the time of the incident. The report explains that a fire had ignited in the wall of the crew cabin behind the cockpit. Smoke filled the cockpit and cabin, causing the crew to become disoriented and crash. Both pilots and an aircrewman died in the accident. The navy is taking steps to prevent accidents like this from happening in the future.

The deceased are Lt. Sean Christopher Snyder, Lt. J. Wesley Van Dorn, and Petty Officer Brian Andrew Collins.
