On Friday afternoon, March 14, the Austin Police Department confirmed it arrested Solomun Weldekeal Araya, 37, in relation to the fatal crash. He was charged with five counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault.

The crash occurred around 11:30 p.m. on March 13 on I-35 Southbound near Parmer Lane and Howard Lane in North Austin. Authorities said the driver of a semi-truck hauling Amazon products caused the major pile-up.

Travis County Court records show that plaintiffs Francisco Villalobos and Priscilla Davila from Bell County (Killeen-Temple area) are seeking $1 million in damages from Amazon, the truck driver arrested in connection with the crash, his employer and a construction company.

Although investigators at the scene initially suspected Araya was under the influence of depressants, an expanded toxicology report released on April 4 confirmed he had no drugs or alcohol in his system at the time of the incident.
