Texas train crash: Two trains collide causing huge fire in town of Panhandle

The crash occurred around 8.40 am Tuesday morning in the town of Panhandle, Texas, just outside of Amarillo, sending a fireball and plumes of black smoke into the horizon. About two-dozen boxcars derailed in the crash.

Carson County law enforcement and rescue officials have not reported any injuries, but hospitals in Amarillo - about 30 minutes away - are operating on high alert as a precaution.

The newspaper also reported that Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway officials confirmed two trains had derailed. The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m., according to the Globe-News.

Rescue efforts underway for 3 railroad employees after trains collide near Panhandle, TX

 Four BNSF employees were involved in the incident. 

Local first responders and BNSF personnel were deployed to the scene. By 9:02 a.m., one employee was transported to a local hospital and is being treated. Rescue efforts are underway at the scene with respect to the three other railroad employees involved in the incident.

Two Trains Collide Head-On in Fiery Crash in Texas, Injuring 1

One patient from the crash was taken to Northwest Texas Healthcare System in nearby Amarillo, Texas. He is in stable, non-critical condition, according to the hospital's marketing director, Patrick Buckley.

Federal Railroad Administration spokesman Matthew Lehner didn't specify how many people were injured in the crash between two BNSF trains near Amarillo.

A trust fund has been established for her son, Jacob Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo.

An eastbound BNSF Railway train failed to slow at a yellow warning signal on June 28 and then continued past a red stop signal before striking an oncoming BNSF train, inspectors for the National Transportation Safety Board said in the report.
