Police: Kentucky driver responsible for deadly Tennessee crash

Police say a Kentucky truck driver involved in a crash that killed six people in Tennessee. Police say they've interviewed Brewer and they're still working to figure out why his truck wasn't able to stop. Police say Benjamin Brewer, 39, of London wasn't able to stop his semi-truck in a construction zone and slammed into eight other vehicles. The crash happened Thursday night on Interstate 75 in Chattanooga. Police say six people, including two children, were killed.

The last victim was 36-year-old Jason Ramos, in yet another vehicle. Police said four of the victims were in one vehicle: 31-year-old Tiffany Watts and 50-year-old Sandra Anderson, both of Tennessee; along with two children, ages 10 or 11 and 8, both from California. The wreck happened on Interstate 75 northbound near the suburb of Ooltewah. Another victim, 37-year-old Brian Gallaher of Tennessee, was in a different vehicle. Police said six other people received injuries that weren't life-threatening, and six more were uninjured.

Driver charged with 6 counts of vehicular homicide in crash

Multiple media outlets report that a Hamilton County grand jury on Monday also indicted 39-year-old Benjamin Brewer of London, Kentucky on four counts of reckless aggravated assault, driving under the influence of narcotics, speeding and making false reports about his duty status.

A hair test administered under an unrelated court order less than three months before the wreck had also turned out positive for meth.

NTSB: Meth & fatigue caused deadly I-75 crash

According to the NTSB report, Brewer's blood tested positive for methamphetamine use, which investigators determined "degraded his driving performance."

The investigation also found that although he had the "opportunity for overnight rest" before the crash, Brewer had likely gone without "sustained rest for 40 hours prior to the accident."

They also cited a failure of Brewers' employer, Cool Runnings Express, for failing to identify risk factors in his pre-employment screening process. The report stated that the company did not have Brewers' entire driving history, including previous accidents.

A new trial date will be selected in court on Monday. The initial jury will be dismissed and a new one chosen later.
