Investigators say two people are dead after a car flipped into the Schuylkill Canal in Upper Providence Township Monday night. Upper Providence police and Montgomery County detectives are investigating whether the driver will face criminal charges. Investigators say the 21-year-old driver and one passenger were able to escape. Four people were in the car when investigators say the driver backed out of a parking area, crossed over roadway, onto a grass embankment causing the car to flip over into the canal. But the two other people in the car drowned, according to investigators.

UPPER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa., (CBS) — A 21-year-old Montgomery County man is facing Vehicular Homicide and other charges, as police say he allegedly drove a car into the Schuylkill Canal in Upper Providence Township, killing two people. Hoffman is charged with accident involving death while not properly licensed, Homicide by Vehicle, and other related charges. The car rolled down the embankment, coming to rest on its roof in water about 4-feet deep. The criminal complaint alleges Hoffman misjudged the distance when he backed up the Volkswagen Passat. Hoffman and one other passenger were able get out of the car, but two other people, 29-year-old Clinton Berger and 25-year-old Lauren Magargal both drowned.
