Two Students Die in Highway 126 Crash

“The vehicle departed its lane of travel, went down a small embankment colliding with a tree. It came to rest down at the embankment. It’s about a 10 foot embankment,” said Oregon State Police Trooper Lang Hinkle.

“A six year average of one crash every three-and-a-half days; one person injured every four days; and a fatal crash every four months; is not acceptable,” said Sonny Chickering, ODOT Region 2 Manager.

“Safety is the most important thing to remember when you get behind the wheel. We know that driving violations — such as speeding, driving impaired or distracted, or riding without a safety belt — are major factors in lane departure and roadway departure crashes,” said Nicole Charlson, a Transportation Department safety officer. “If we can change that behavior, we can reduce fatalities.”

Two students from Mapleton High School are reported dead after a crash on Oregon 126, a famously dangerous highway between Eugene and the coast where an average of three people die a year in accidents. Three other people, including the driver of the car are hospitalized but their identities and conditions are not known. More information as it is released.
