The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened shortly after midnight Saturday, when a boat struck what is believed to be a tree sticking out of the water about 5 miles east of the city of Devils Lake.

KZZY-FM reports that Thomas Burns entered his plea in writing Tuesday and did not appear in court. Burns' attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the case.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) - A Grand Forks man accused in a fatal boat crash on Devils Lake has pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors. Court documents show 54-year-old Thomas Burns pleaded guilty Thursday to felony manslaughter, three counts of felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor boating under the influence. Authorities say Burns was drunk last Aug. 9 when a boat he was operating on Devils Lake struck a tree about 30 yards from shore while traveling at more than 30 mph. The crash killed 26-year-old April Stenger, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and injured three other passengers. Burns could face more than 25 years in prison, but prosecutor Lonnie Olson tells KZZY radio that the plea deal calls for Burns to serve two years.

Man sentenced to 2 years in prison in fatal boat crash

A 54-year-old Grand Forks man charged in a fatal boat crash on Devils Lake has been sentenced to two years in prison.

Officials have identified the victim in a fatal boating crash on Devils Lake as 26-year-old April Stenger from Detroit Lakes, MN. Stenger was pronounced deceased at the crash site. Four other people were injured including three with critical injuries, and were taken to local hospitals
