April Stenger, 26, killed and four people injured in boating accident on Devils Lake, North Dakota

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office says the crash happened shortly after midnight Saturday, when a boat struck what is believed to be a tree sticking out of the water about 5 miles east of the city of Devils Lake.

A boat crash on Devils Lake in northeastern North Dakota has killed a Minnesota woman and injured four other people. This story has been corrected to show that the crash happened early Sunday, not early Monday. Two were men from Devils Lake and the other a woman from Halstad, Minnesota. Three other passengers in the boat were flown to a Grand Forks hospital, all with what Nelson described as critical injuries.

DEVILS LAKE. --The driver in a fatal boat crash on Devils Lake earlier this month has been charged with four felonies, including manslaughter.

A 54-year-old Grand Forks man facing criminal charges in a fatal boat crash has pleaded not guilty. He is charged with felony manslaughter, felony reckless endangerment and boating under the influence. Authorities allege Burns was intoxicated on Aug. 9 when a boat he was driving on Devils Lake struck a tree about 30 yards from shore. KZZY-FM reports that Thomas Burns entered his plea in writing Tuesday and did not appear in court. Burns' attorney did not immediately return a call seeking comment on the case.

A Grand Forks man involved in a fatal boating accident on Devils Lake in August pleaded not guilty to criminal charges Monday.

DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) - A Grand Forks man accused in a fatal boat crash on Devils Lake has pleaded guilty in a deal with prosecutors. Court documents show 54-year-old Thomas Burns pleaded guilty Thursday to felony manslaughter, three counts of felony reckless endangerment and misdemeanor boating under the influence. Authorities say Burns was drunk last Aug. 9 when a boat he was operating on Devils Lake struck a tree about 30 yards from shore while traveling at more than 30 mph. The crash killed 26-year-old April Stenger, of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and injured three other passengers. Burns could face more than 25 years in prison, but prosecutor Lonnie Olson tells KZZY radio that the plea deal calls for Burns to serve two years.
