DA to release info in fatal Hwy 17 crash that killed newborn, toddler

Gentry and Hadley Eddings, both 28, were involved in the Pender County crash, near Wilmington. More information is expected to come out in the fatal crash that claimed the life of a newborn and toddler in late May on Highway 17. Investigators say a box truck was approaching stopped traffic and failed to stop in time, resulting in a chain-reaction crash.

Matthew Deans, 28, of Wilmington, was indicted Monday on two counts of involuntary manslaughter in the deaths of Dobbs and Reed Eddings.

More charges filed in crash that killed NC church leader's children

The Star-News reports 28-year-old Matthew Deans was charged with two new counts Tuesday night on top of the two charges brought against him Saturday. The new charges include a second count of misdemeanor death by vehicle and a charge of failure to wear a seatbelt, said Assistant District Attorney Connie Jordan.

A multi-vehicle crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 17 and Sloop Loop Point Road when a commercial box truck heading southbound on Highway 17 failed to slow for traffic, causing a crash that involved the truck and 3 other vehicles.  Victims had to be extricated from the first vehicle that was hit in which the deceased child was a passenger. The child's pregnant mother was injured and transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where she is said to be recovering after an emergency C-section. The baby who was delivered died days later. The truck driver, Matthew Deans, 28, of Wilmington, has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle and failure to reduce speed.
