According to the Coast Guard, the 90-foot tugboat, called The Specialist, struck a barge at about 5:20 a.m. this morning. The Coast Guard's New York station sent a 45-foot rescue boat to the scene, and at about 5:30 a.m., a first responder recovered one of the three people who went under. The AP reportsthat this person died on the way to the hospital.

Two people were still missing at the time, and several search crews from various agencies were canvassing the area. 

"This morning's deadly tugboat accident near the new Tappan Zee Bridge only highlights the dangerous work of those involved in such a massive construction project," Rockland County Executive Ed Day said in a release Saturday morning.

Officials were notified at 5:20 a.m. that the tugboat, a steel-hulled vessel named the Specialist, had sunk, and that one person had been pulled from the river 10 minutes later and brought to shore for treatment, the Coast Guard said.

Attorney James Mercante tells The Associated Press that Saturday’s fatal boat crash was “a shocking, horrific marine tragedy.”

The two men, who weren't identified, were presumed dead after the 90-foot tugboat named Specialist hit a barge around 5:20 a.m. Saturday and sank, killing a fellow crew member and spilling about 5,000 gallons of fuel into the water north of New York City.

A day after a tugboat crashed into a barge north of New York City, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has met with the family of a second crew member whose body was pulled out of the Hudson River.

A third crew member was still missing on Sunday.

Conklin’s brother told Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino the victim had been worried about the trip “because he felt that the currents were very, very strong,” Astorino told reporters, including WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell.

"I never never saw someone as excited to go to work," Amon recalled of her father. "And as funny as it sounds it wasn't to get away. He just loved the job."

The Specialist reportedly made radio transmissions that said, "We are too close. We have to move left," New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Sunday. "But they couldn't move in time and sometimes it's just that. Just an accident."

The final person on board the tugboat that crashed near the Tappan Zee Bridge this weekend has been found inside the sunken vessel in the Hudson River.

A 1,000 ton crane is due to arrive from Virginia at the salvage site late Tuesday or early Wednesday. It is scheduled to lift 'Specialist' to the surface early Thursday morning.

Authorities entered the 90-foot vessel shortly after it was lifted and suspended at the water's surface by a massive crane Thursday morning.

The accident could have been avoided, says Donna, who has filed a $10 million lawsuit against tugboat owner NY Marine Towing, and Tappan Zee Constructors and Traylor Bros., which are building the new Hudson River span.

Captain James Morrison invited the unidentified woman to accompany him on the second boat and was with her below deck when the ship he was supposed to be commanding struck a construction barge in the predawn hours of March 12, according to The Journal News.
