Four women were killed and several were injured Saturday when the limousine they were riding in was struck broadside by a pickup truck on Long Island'€™s East End, media reported, citing police and witnesses. Two women were injured, along with both of the limousine'€™s drivers. Three victims died at the scene and a fourth in hospital, according to the reports. The driver of the truck, which slammed into the middle of the limousine, would be charged with driving while intoxicated, Southold Police Department chief Martin Flatley told media.

Spota, in an interview with The Associated Press, disputed the lawyer's contention, saying Romeo fled the crash scene and was found hiding in a nearby wooded area following the crash. He said he would discuss the case at the briefing later Monday. Flatley identified the dead as Brittany M. Schulman, 23, of Smithtown, on Long Island's North Shore; Lauren Baruch, 24, also of Smithtown; Stephanie Belli, 23, of nearby Kings Park; and Amy R. Grabina, 23, of Commack, also on the North Shore. Four other women and the limo driver were hospitalized.

It was the second Long Island crash with multiple fatalities in a week. Romeo, a 55-year-old businessman from Southold, was arraigned Sunday on a misdemeanor DWI charge at Eastern Long Island Hospital in Greenport. Spota's comments came shortly after visiting the crash scene, where he spoke with investigators. The other motorist was charged with driving while intoxicated and one of his friends is facing charges for allegedly assisting him in leaving the crash scene. He went about 1,000 feet, then jumped a fence and was walking down an embankment when an officer spotted him and brought him back to the scene, Spota said.

Blood Tests Show Pickup Driver in Limo Crash That Killed 4 Women Was Below Legal Alcohol Limit: Officials

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said Romeo's blood alcohol content, which was tested one hour and 40 minutes after the crash, was .066, below the legal limit of .08. Three of the four women killed in the crash were laid to rest this week. The district attorney's office is also investigating whether Romeo may have had any drugs in his system at the time of the crash; Spota said those toxicology results would take more time. Romeo's lawyer said his client was seriously hurt in the crash and that he expects Romeo to remain hospitalized for the foreseeable future. Spota said authorities have the limo driver's two cellphones as well as Romeo's cellphone and are looking into call and text records.

The SUV plowed into the limousine, hitting it broadside along Route 48. The limo ferried eight passengers between Long Island wineries when it was struck at about 5:30 p.m., said a woman who lives nearby and rushed to the crash site.

“It was the most horrific thing I’ve ever seen,” a resident, who witnessed the collision aftermath near Depot Lane, told the Daily News. She declined to be identified.

The driver, Carlos Pino, took a wide turn on Route 48 when his limousine was struck broadside by a man in a pickup truck who was later charged with drunken driving. Pino was charged with criminally negligent homicide, assault, failure to yield the right of way, reckless driving and other traffic law infractions, while the SUV driver who struck the limo was also indicted on DWI charges.
