Officials told KRQE News 13, there are injuries.

State police said this is a hazmat situation due to the diesel fuel from the two trains.

“The irony of course is that the survival space in the lead locomotive was very much in tact. so had they stayed aboard the locomotive, they would have very likely survived the accident,” said Earl Weener, a board member for NTSB.

Two freight trains collided in the Midway area near Roswell in Chavez County early Tuesday morning. The crash happened near the intersection of State Road 2 and Vista Largo. The highway is currently blocked. New Mexico State Police said one person was killed when more than 10 cars derailed. Check back for updates on this developing story.
