In a devastating incident that shocked the local community, a fatal drunk driving crash claimed the life of 5-year-old Kamari Wolfe during a school drop-off in October 2023. The accident occurred near Somerset Academy Losee campus when Guillermo Chochi-Senobua, driving under the influence, veered into oncoming traffic while passing two stopped vehicles. At the critical moment, young Kamari was crossing the road and was fatally struck by Chochi-Senobua's work van. The driver, who had just dropped off his own child at the school minutes earlier, was found to have a blood alcohol content of .098, exceeding the legal limit of .08. Adding to the severity of the incident, Chochi-Senobua had an active DUI warrant from Texas at the time of the crash. The case has drawn significant attention, with Chochi-Senobua expected to be sentenced by Judge Jessica K. Peterson after pleading guilty in March to DUI resulting in death.

Location and Infrastructure

The accident took place near Somerset Academy Losee campus, a critical area with high pedestrian activity, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up times. This location represents a sensitive traffic zone where children are frequently present, requiring heightened driver awareness and caution. The surrounding area likely experiences significant traffic congestion during school hours, with multiple vehicles stopping and children crossing the street. The proximity to an educational institution underscores the importance of traffic safety measures, including reduced speed limits, crosswalks, and increased vigilance from drivers and school staff.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Nevada law, DUI resulting in death is a serious criminal offense with significant legal consequences. Victims' families may pursue civil claims for wrongful death, potentially seeking compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, loss of companionship, and emotional distress. The statute of limitations for filing such claims typically ranges from two to three years, depending on specific circumstances. While criminal proceedings address the driver's legal culpability, civil actions provide a separate avenue for families to seek justice. Potential compensation may include economic damages (such as financial losses) and non-economic damages (including pain and suffering). Insurance considerations are complex in such cases, potentially involving the driver's personal auto insurance, employer's insurance (if the vehicle was work-related), and additional liability coverage.
