2 teens killed in crash north of Battle Creek

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Department says two teenage girl died after the vehicle they were in drove off the road and hit a tree Thursday afternoon. Deputies told 24 Hour News 8 the victims were both Pennfield High School students, ages 16 and 17.

Sunday night friends and family gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember Kaleigh Woodman and Sabrina Almaraz. Both were juniors at Pennfield High School. Visitation for Sabrina Almaraz is Thursday at Farley from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00. Sabrina Almaraz was 17.

PENNFIELD, Mich. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - Police in Calhoun County have been investigating a crash that claimed the lives of two teenagers in Pennfield. Police say that the driver, Sabrina Almaraz, was going 103 miles-per-hour when she lost control and hit a tree. Sheriff Saxton says that speed was the main reason for the crash, although driver inexperience also played a role. Both Almaraz and Kaleigh Woodman were killed. Her service begins at 1:00 p.m. at the Dexter Lake Church of God on East Michigan Avenue in Battle Creek.

And, should that young driver be pulled over for any reason, police will send a notification to the parents. The deaths of 17-year-old Sabrina Almaraz and 16-year-old Kaleigh Woodman have rocked the small community of Pennfield. "When the fatal crashes involve teenagers, it's a tough thing for the community; the friends and the students involved," Saxton said. Speed was, of course, the main factor in this crash, but he says on top of that, you have a young and inexperienced driver. "They were able to download the data retrieval from that vehicle, which shows speed of vehicle 5 seconds prior to crash," he said.
