Five “young adults’’ died early Monday when a wrong-way driver slammed into a second vehicle, killing the wrong-way driver and four people in the second car, which burst into flames upon impact, State Police said.

Officials say the preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling south on the northbound side of Interstate 495 in Middleborough, about 35 miles south of Boston, struck a vehicle heading in the correct direction at 12:11 a.m. Monday.

Police said a woman was driving the wrong way on the northbound side of I-495 when she crashed head-on into another car with four people inside. That car burst into flames upon impact. All five people were pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police are investigating the crash and are trying to determine why the woman ended up driving on the wrong way of the highway. State Police said the driver who was hit head-on never had a chance to get out of the way.
