Kraig Diggs, 20, Jordan Fisher, 20, Jordan Galvin-Jutras, 19, Corey Licata, 18, and Valantein Burson, 31, killed in wrong-way crash on I-495 in Middleborough, Massachusetts

Five “young adults’’ died early Monday when a wrong-way driver slammed into a second vehicle, killing the wrong-way driver and four people in the second car, which burst into flames upon impact, State Police said.

Officials say the preliminary investigation indicates that a vehicle traveling south on the northbound side of Interstate 495 in Middleborough, about 35 miles south of Boston, struck a vehicle heading in the correct direction at 12:11 a.m. Monday.

State police said the four people in the vehicle were: a 20-year-old man from Paxton and Osterville, a 19-year-old Hyannis man, a 19-year-old Harwich man, and an 18-year-old man from West Babylon, N.Y.

Police said a woman was driving the wrong way on the northbound side of I-495 when she crashed head-on into another car with four people inside. That car burst into flames upon impact. All five people were pronounced dead at the scene.

State Police are investigating the crash and are trying to determine why the woman ended up driving on the wrong way of the highway. State Police said the driver who was hit head-on never had a chance to get out of the way.

Kip Diggs told WFXT that his son Kraig and Kraig’s cousin, Jordan Galvin, were in the car.

State police on Tuesday identified the victims of the Monday morning crash as 19-year-old Jordan Galvin-Jutras and 20-year-old Kraig Diggs, both of Barnstable, who both attended Anna Maria College in Paxton; and 19-year-old Jordan Fisher, of Harwich, and 18-year-old Corey Licata, of West Babylon, New York, who both attended Becker College in Worcester.

In the last year, Burson, who lived in Fall River, had landed her dream job working with prisoners at the Massachusetts Treatment Center in Bridgewater and planned to go back to school to pursue a doctorate degree in clinical psychology, Thorpe said.

A vigil was held on the Hyannis Village Green to honor Kraig Diggs, Jordan Galvin-Jutras, Jordan Fisher, and Cory Licata.
