Devon Staples, 22, killed in fireworks accident at residence on South Street in Calais, Maine

A young Calais man died last night in what police called a '€œbizarre'€ fireworks accident, the first such death to have occurred in the state since the six-decade-old ban against the sale of fireworks was lifted, according to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Stephen McCausland. A list of those incidents is being compiled by the fire marshal'€™s office, but no details are expected until later today. Devon Staples, 22, of Calais was setting off fireworks with friends in the backyard of a South Street home when the fatality occurred, the state fire marshal'€™s office reported. According to investigators, Staples had placed a fireworks mortar tube on top of his head and set it off. 

A Calais man died on the Fourth of July after he had placed a mortar tube for fireworks on his head and it exploded, the state fire marshal's office said. The fire marshal's office is compiling a list of incident, with details being released later Sunday. They included burns and eye injuries, McCausland said. Devon Staples, 22, was shooting off fireworks with friends on South Street when he suffered a fatal head injury and died around 10 p.m.

Authorities said a 22-year-old man died after he launched a firework off the top of his head on Saturday night. WCSH reported that 22-year-old Devon Staples and his friends were drinking at the time of the incident. It reportedly happened in the backyard of one of Staples'€™ friend'€™s homes in Calais, Maine. According to the state Department of Public Safety, Staples placed a fireworks mortar tube on his head and set it off. He said his brother was holding a lighter and it accidentally caused the firework to go off.  

Staples said his brother worked at Walt Disney World as a character performer. A man who was killed in a firework accident in Maine was a former Orlando resident who worked as a performer at Disney World, his brother told the New York Daily News. Staples told the Daily News the incident was "a freak accident.  Staples was listed as living on Oak Park Way near Lake Frederica for part of 2014, according to public records. A Facebook friend, Victoria Whitten McGuire, posted a photo of Staples in costume as the Beauty and the Beast character Gaston.

They were enjoying a house party in Calais, when things took a turn for the worst.  Police say Staples was drinking at a friends'€™ house on South Street. Staples died around 10 p.m. Saturday after state police say he set a firework off on the top of his head. The explosion killed him instantly.
