5 die in 2 overnight accidents on state roads

Five people died in separate accidents on state roadways in an eight-hour span Wednesday night (Nov. 25) and early Thursday morning. A chemical breath test indicated the uninjured truck driver was not impaired, and toxicological samples were taken from the motorcyclists, who were pronounced dead on the scene. Two motorcyclists collided with an 18-wheeler on State Route 14 shortly after 6 p.m. as the eastbound truck turned left into the lane of the oncoming motorcyclists, according to a Louisiana State Police news release.

Two Abbeville motorcyclists dead after collision with 18-wheeler

An Abbeville man and his nephew died Wednesday evening when their motorcycles collided with an 18-wheeler on La. 14 west of U.S. 90 in Iberia Parish, State Police said. Jones Mitchell, 45, and Gerald Mitchell, 25, both of Abbeville, were riding Suzuki motorcycles westbound on La. 14 around 6 p.m. Comesana, who was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured in the wreck, Matey said. Matey said the wreck remains under investigation and the Iberia Parish District Attorney’s Office is reviewing case for possible criminal charges. Toxicological samples were taken from Jones and Gerald Mitchell for analysis.

Holiday wrecks claimfive lives in Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS — Louisiana State Police say two highway wrecks killed five people in the opening hours of the Thanksgiving weekend. She says 25-year-old Gerald Mitchell and his uncle, 45-year-old Jones Mitchell, were heading west on Louisiana Highway 14 and the big rig turned into their path. Thursday, a 2012 Jaguar XF ran off the Parish Road 11 in Port Sulphur, hit a tree and burst into flames. She says all three occupants died and will be identified through autopsies. Trooper Melissa Matey says in a news release that an Abbeville man and his nephew died when their motorcycles ran into a tractor-trailer Wednesday evening in Iberia Parish.

Since motorcycle crashes often end in serious injuries, victims need immediate help

Motorcycle accidents are more likely to end in serious injuries or death for the motorcyclist, since the rider is not protected from the force of a collision. When a motorcycle accident happens, the injured rider needs immediate, appropriate medical care, the accident needs to be investigated, and the insurance companies need to be informed.
