Cyclist dies Day 1 of RAGBRAI in collision with pickup truck

A cyclist riding in the Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa died Sunday morning near Glenwood in a collision with a pickup truck, the Iowa State Patrol said.

“Wayne Ezell was the ultimate journalist. Reporter, editor, publisher, reader advocate and editorial writer, he personified the best in journalism. His passion for the profession never wavered,” Mike Clark, editorial page editor of the Times-Union, said of his friend and colleague.

Colleague: Fallen cyclist ‘lived life the right way’

“I gave him the most difficult subjects to write about and put the newspaper’s reputation on the line because that’s what an editorial does,” Clark said. “He never let us down.”

Charges Filed In Fatal RAGBRAI Crash

After a lengthy investigation authorities determined that Phillippus’ was not intoxicated at the time of the crash.  He has now been charged with “Actions Against Bicyclists”, a simple misdemeanor.
