A bus carrying members of a college bowling team crashed Thursday morning along a southern Indiana highway while en route to a tournament in Tennessee, injuring numerous students, officials said.

“We don’t know the cause but the bus did drive off the left side of the roadway and crossed back over both lanes before going off the right side of the road. It went over the embankment and overturned, and then it rolled into some trees,” Huls said.

The driver was identified as Rex Altenburg, 76, of Fort Wayne, Indiana. On Thursday, a hospital official said he was being evaluated for a possible heart attack or stroke suffered before the crash. It is not yet clear, however, if Altenburg actually had a medical emergency, or if something else led to the crash.

Investigators are examining data recorded by a "black box" device located on a charter bus that crashed in Clark County, Indiana, last week, according to a news release.
A bus carrying the men's and women's bowling teams of Indiana Tech was driving on Interstate 65 when the vehicle swerved to the right and overturned. There were 16 bowling team members onboard, as well as the bus driver, the team's coach and his wife. Eight people suffered minor injuries and were taken to Scott County Hospital. Those most seriously hurt were taken to University of Louisville Hospital, many of whom were airlifted. The exact number of people hurt is unknown, but there were no fatalities at the crash scene. Investigators believe that the bus driver may have suffered a sudden medical problem.
