Logansport woman, 47, killed in two-vehicle collision on US 24

According to a press release from the Cass County Sheriff's Office, 47-year-old Carrie March was driving a Ford Escape northbound on County Road 600 East when she crossed the eastbound lanes of U.S. 24.

On Tuesday afternoon, a tragic collision at the intersection of US-24 and County Road 600 East in Cass County claimed the life of 47-year-old Carrie March. According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred shortly after 3 p.m. when March, driving a Ford Escape, failed to yield the right of way and was struck by a Nissan Rogue. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene following reports of the crash. March was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries but unfortunately succumbed to those injuries later that day. The driver of the Nissan Rogue and a three-year-old passenger were also taken to the hospital, though their injuries were reported as non-life-threatening. The intersection remained partially closed while authorities conducted their investigation, with traffic being diverted to alternative routes. The Cass County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

Location and Infrastructure

The collision took place at the intersection of US Highway 24 and County Road 600 East in rural Cass County, Indiana. US-24 is a major east-west highway that traverses through the county, serving as a primary transportation artery for both local and commercial traffic. This particular intersection is a conventional two-way stop configuration, with traffic on County Road 600 East required to stop while US-24 traffic has the right of way. The intersection lacks traffic signals but is marked with standard stop signs and advance warning indicators. The area surrounding the crash site is predominantly agricultural, with scattered residences and businesses along the highway corridor. Known for relatively high speeds on the main highway and limited visibility during certain conditions, this intersection has been identified by local transportation officials as requiring careful navigation, particularly for drivers attempting to cross or merge onto US-24 from connecting county roads.

Legal Rights and Considerations

In Indiana, accidents involving failure to yield the right of way fall under specific traffic regulations outlined in Indiana Code Section 9-21-8-29, which establishes driver responsibilities at intersections. Under Indiana's comparative fault system, compensation may be affected by the degree of fault assigned to each party involved. Survivors of fatal accidents may have grounds for wrongful death claims, which must typically be filed within two years of the date of death according to Indiana's statute of limitations. Insurance considerations include potential claims against the at-fault driver's liability coverage, while uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage may provide additional protection. Recoverable damages potentially include medical expenses, funeral costs, lost income, and compensation for pain and suffering. Those affected by such accidents should consider consulting with a personal injury attorney to understand their specific legal options and ensure proper documentation of all damages.
