Wrong-way driver accused of DUI causes major crash on Downtown Connector, closing lanes for hours

The trooper tried to “intercept” the driver, but by the time he caught up, they had been involved in a crash.

Underage impaired driver responsible for Downtown Connector crash, GSP says

Thornton was charged with driving under the influence, driving on wrong side of roadway, possession of fraudulent driver's license, serious injury by motor vehicle, and under-age consumption.

A severe multi-vehicle collision disrupted traffic for several hours on the I-75/85 connector in Midtown Atlanta early Friday morning when an alleged drunk driver traveled northbound in the southbound HOV lane. According to Georgia State Patrol (GSP), a trooper initially spotted the wrong-way driver but was unable to intercept them before the crash occurred. The incident, which involved three vehicles, prompted authorities to close all southbound lanes before North Avenue around 3:15 a.m. Following the collision, the wrong-way driver failed a field sobriety test administered by GSP troopers and was subsequently charged with driving under the influence. Additional charges included underage consumption and possession of a fake ID. Two individuals—a driver and a passenger—sustained injuries requiring transportation to Grady Memorial Hospital, though officials did not specify which vehicle they occupied. Emergency crews worked through the early morning hours to clear extensive debris scattered across the roadway, including a severely damaged vehicle that came to rest on its side against the median. Transportation officials managed to reopen two lanes by approximately 6:30 a.m., with all lanes restored to normal traffic flow by 7:00 a.m.

Location and Infrastructure

The I-75/85 connector, commonly known as the Downtown Connector, represents one of Atlanta's most critical and heavily trafficked roadway segments, carrying over 300,000 vehicles daily through the heart of the city. This 7.5-mile stretch where Interstates 75 and 85 merge creates a complex traffic environment with multiple entrance and exit ramps serving Midtown and Downtown Atlanta. The section near North Avenue specifically features a challenging configuration with HOV lanes separated by barriers, multiple lane shifts, and significant merging activity from nearby on-ramps. This high-volume corridor experiences substantial congestion during peak hours and has historically been identified as a hotspot for collisions, particularly during overnight hours when visibility can be compromised and impaired driving incidents increase. The area is surrounded by prominent landmarks including Georgia Tech, the Fox Theatre, and numerous high-rise buildings that make up Atlanta's distinctive skyline.

Legal Rights and Considerations

Under Georgia law, victims of accidents involving drunk drivers may pursue compensation through multiple avenues. Georgia follows a modified comparative negligence system, meaning injured parties can recover damages as long as they are less than 50% at fault. The state's DUI laws (O.C.G.A. § 40-6-391) carry severe penalties, particularly for underage drivers, who face a zero-tolerance policy. Victims may be entitled to both economic damages (medical expenses, lost wages, property damage) and non-economic damages (pain and suffering, emotional distress). Additionally, in cases involving intoxicated drivers, punitive damages may be available under O.C.G.A. § 51-12-5.1. Georgia's statute of limitations generally allows two years to file personal injury claims and four years for property damage claims. Insurance considerations include potential claims against the at-fault driver's liability coverage, uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, and personal injury protection benefits, depending on the policies in place. An experienced Atlanta personal injury lawyer will handle all aspects of the legal claim.
