Man charged with DUI Manslaughter after crash that killed father and son

William Gainey, 61 of Lake Wales, was charged with two counts of DUI manslaughter Monday night. Investigators believed he was intoxicated at the time of the crash, and even arrested him that night for a separate domestic battery charge, saying he was involved in an altercation just an hour before the accident.

The responding deputy found Gainey at his home on Silver Spur Loop the following day, after he was released from Lakeland Regional Medical Center, and took him into custody on a warrant for domestic battery.
61-year-old William Gainey was driving a pickup truck on Cypress Gardens Boulevard at about 10:30 p.m. when he failed to slow down for the stop light at the intersection with Lake Ruby Drive and rear-ended a car. Both vehicles were propelled about 150 feet from the collision site, and Gainey's truck flipped onto its roof. The two people in the car that was rear-ended were identified as a father and his son, Christopher and Jayden Ivey, ages 39 and 4. Both were found dead at the scene. Gainey was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries.
