Deputies: Drunk driver critically injures cyclist in Riverview

A bicyclist was critically injured and the driver of the van that struck him was arrested Monday night in Riverview, authorities said.

Sloop’s van struck the back of the bicycle, ejecting Saxe and “causing serious trauma,” the email said. Saxe was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital where is remains in critical condition.

Jason Saxe and Willis VanCleave were riding bikes on Rhodine Road when Saxe was hit from behind by a Dodge van. Saxe was thrown from the bike and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. VanCleve was struck after Saxe and suffered minor injuries. The driver of the van, Freddie Ray Sloop, was arrested for driving under the influence after giving blood alcohol content samples of .127 and .129 percent via a breathalyzer test.
