Jason Saxe and Willis VanCleave were riding bikes on Rhodine Road when Saxe was hit from behind by a Dodge van. Saxe was thrown from the bike and sustained serious injuries. He was transported to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition. VanCleve was struck after Saxe and suffered minor injuries. The driver of the van, Freddie Ray Sloop, was arrested for driving under the influence after giving blood alcohol content samples of .127 and .129 percent via a breathalyzer test.
