Small plane crashes in Weirsdale, at least 2 dead

At least two people are dead after a small plane has crashed in the Weirsdale area, Marion County firefighters said Wednesday. The crash site is in southern Marion County, just north of the Lake County line near Lady Lake, and northeast of the Sumter County line. The single-engine aircraft went down around 9:30 a.m. near Southeast 155th Avenue, near Hammock Pond, according to fire investigators.

Plane crashes in Marion County, fire officials say

A plane crashed Wednesday morning in Weirsdale, according to Marion County Fire officials. Authorities did not release the cause of the crash or say whether anyone was injured. Photos released by the fire department show burn marks and heavy damage to the wing of the plane, which was partly covered by a tarp.  

Couple Killed in Single-Engine Plane Crash

Two people are dead after their single-engine plane crashed and caught fire in north Florida. Authorities say Dauphin Richard and Merry Womack, both 78, died when their plane went down Wednesday morning in Weirsdale, a small community near Ocala in Marion County. The Ocala Star-Banner reports that Richard Womack was a retired FedEx pilot and flight engineer for the U.S. Air Force. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the plane took off from a grass airstrip near Ocala at 9:40 a.m. and crashed shortly thereafter.
