At least two people are dead after a small plane has crashed in the Weirsdale area, Marion County firefighters said Wednesday. The crash site is in southern Marion County, just north of the Lake County line near Lady Lake, and northeast of the Sumter County line. The single-engine aircraft went down around 9:30 a.m. near Southeast 155th Avenue, near Hammock Pond, according to fire investigators.

The Ocala Star-Banner reports that Richard Womack was a retired FedEx pilot and flight engineer for the U.S. Air Force. Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen says the plane took off from a grass airstrip near Ocala at 9:40 a.m. and crashed shortly thereafter.
