A single-car crash killed one person late Friday night near Melbourne Square mall, Melbourne police said.

Melbourne traffic homicide detectives have identified the victim of Saturday's fatal crash near the Melbourne Square Mall main entrance as Lucas LaFountain-Boyd.

He was born in Middlebury, Vt., where he attended Mary Hogan Elementary, and later lived in Mexico and Florida. After majoring in environmental studies at college, he worked for the Florida Park Service, while living aboard a sailboat in Biscayne Bay. He later moved to St. Petersburg.
According to authorities, a blue Volkswagen Golf was driving hastily west on U.S. 192 near Melbourne Square mall, swerving through traffic, when it spun in an intersection and struck a concrete pole near McClain Drive. The victim, who has not been publicly identified, was pronounced dead later at Holmes Regional Medical Center.
