A 53-year-old Palm Bay man was killed after he was ejected from his vehicle during a roll-over crash on Interstate 95 in Brevard County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.
Gary Smith was driving south in the far right lane of I-95 at about 2:17 a.m. Monday, when a 2012 Jeep driven by Justin Looman, 29, of West Melbourne, tried to merge into the lane, FHP said.
The front right of Looman’s Jeep struck the left rear of Smith’s vehicle, causing it to roll over several times, investigators said.
The crash happened about three miles south of North Wickham Road.
Smith, who was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from his vehicle into a wooded area, FHP said.
His vehicle came to rest down the embankment on its left side.
Looman’s Jeep continued for a short way before veering off the roadway into the tree line.
Smith was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Looman was taken to Viera Hospital with serious injuries. His condition was not immediately available.
