FHP: Bicyclist killed in St. Johns County crash

The accident happened about 9 p.m. near the intersection of U.S. 1 South and Datil Pepper Road. The crash report states a Honda Fit was traveling in the inside lane of southbound U.S. 1 when it struck a St. Augustine man who was attempting to bike across the highway. Charles Frederick Barret, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the crash report.

St. Augustine bicyclist dies in U.S. 1 crash

Barret was pronounced deceased at the scene, the Highway Patrol said. Investigators said Barret tried to cross U.S. 1 and rode right into the path of a Honda Fit driven by an 18-year-old Palm Coast woman. Charles Frederick Barret was riding east on Datil Pepper Road on a bicycle, approaching U.S. 1 at 9:10 p.m. when the accident occurred, the Highway Patrol said.
