Driver killed, passenger critically injured in one car accident on Butler Boulevard early Saturday

One person was killed and second critically injured in a one vehicle crash in the 1500 block of J. Turner Butler Boulevard about 2:50 a.m. Saturday, Jacksonville Beach police reported. Investigators said the driver apparently lost control of a 1998 Honda Civil and crashed into a wood area on the north side of Butler near Sanctuary Boulevard.

Investigators said the driver apparently lost control of a 1998 Honda Civil and crashed into a wood area on the north side of Butler near Sanctuary Boulevard. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was airlifted by helicopter to UF Health Jacksonville in critical condition.

Investigators said the driver, 33-year-old Billy Joe Pate III of Jacksonville, apparently lost control of a 1998 Honda Civic while travelling westbound and crashed into a wooded area on the north side of Butler. Pate was pronounced dead at the scene. Joseph Gaines of Jacksonville, who was a passenger, was taken by helicopter to UF Health Jacksonville where he remains in critical condition.
