It appears that only one person was in the car at the time of the crash, but she could not confirm whether any other person was involved.

Firefighters were working to rescue at least one unresponsive occupant about 1:20 p.m., she said.

State police have identified the driver who was killed in the car that went over an embankment off of West River Road and into the Farmington River this afternoon.

Fire crews from several area departments rushed to the scene with water rescue gear, but Gibb was fatally injured in the accident. 

Kenneth Gibb, 46, was the lone occupant of West River Road went it veered off the roadway down an embankment and into a the Farmington River Wednesday afternoon, trapping Gibb inside. The accident occurred at about 1:10 p.m. in the Riverton section of town, and emergency crews worked to free Gibb from the car. Life Star helicopter was called to the scene, but Gibb did not survive. Anyone who witness the accident is asked to call State Police at 860-626-7900.
