Gilroy: Authorities identify San Benito Co. teen killed in crash near Highway 25

GILROY -- A 17-year-old boy from a small San Benito County community has been identified as the driver killed Monday in a collision on a twisty rural road south of Gilroy, authorities said. The Nissan driver was not injured in the crash, which remains under investigation. The CHP said a witness reported that the Chevy was traveling about 60 mph in a 45 mph zone when the collision occurred. It was not immediately clear whether drug or alcohol use factored into the incident. The Chevy sideswiped a Nissan driven by a 31-year-old Gilroy woman, veered into the southbound lanes then off the roadway, where it crashed into a tree and tumbled down an embankment, the CHP said.
