Off-duty Los Angeles County deputy killed in head-on crash

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) An off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy was killed and another driver seriously injured in a head-on collision in Santa Clarita, authorities said Thursday. The 31-year-old deputy, who lived in Lancaster, was on his way home from work when the crash occurred near an intersection late Wednesday, according to Dispatch Supervisor Kyle Sandford of the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The death was confirmed by Deputy Kelvin Moody of the Sheriff's Information Bureau. The California Highway Patrol said the deputy's southbound vehicle crossed double yellow lines and collided with a vehicle coming the other way, City News Service reported. Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in the collision, the CHP said.
