Road worker dies in Sumter County crash

A state road worker was killed Monday after his truck was hit by an 18-wheeler in a construction zone in Sumter County. Alabama Department of Transportation worker Tonnie Bernard Watkins, 52, was working in a construction zone on Interstate 20/59 near Livingston when his dump truck was hit by a semi-truck, according to Alabama state troopers. Watkins, who lived in York, was taken to Hill Hospital in York, where he was pronounced dead. Truck driver James Godbolt Jr., 28, of Mullins, S.C. was taken to Rush Hospital in Meridian, Miss., where he was treated for injuries. The accident happened near the 19.5 mile marker, two and a half miles north of Livingston in Sumter County.

ALDOT worker killed on-duty in two-vehicle wreck

A Monday morning crash left an Alabama Department of Transportation employee dead and another person injured near Livingston, according to authorities. Tonnie Bernard Watkins, 52 of York, was killed on-duty when the International dump truck he was driving was hit in a construction zone on I-59 two and a half miles outside of Livingston at 10:20 a.m. He was pronounced dead after being transported to York’s Hill Hospital. James Godbolt, the 28-year-old driver of the International Prostar that was also involved, was treated at Rush Hospital in Meridian, Miss. The wreck is still under investigation.
