Muscle Shoals man killed, 2 injured in crash

One man was killed, and two others injured following a Sunday morning wreck in Colbert County. Richard Edwards, 25, of Muscle Shoals, was identified as the person killed in the crash. According to Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley, the wreck happened around 5 a.m. on Cox Boulevard in Sheffield. Their names or conditions are not known at this time. The car appeared to have left the road and hit a tree.

Butler said Richard Edwards, 25, of Muscle Shoals, a passenger in the back seat of the car, was killed. Thompson’s condition was unavailable, but Sheffield Police Chief Greg Ray said Thompson was still hospitalized. Huntsville Hospital officials said Abernathy is in critical condition in the facility’s neurological intensive care unit. Authorities said Abernathy, a passenger, and Thompson, the driver of the vehicle, were initially taken to Helen Keller Hospital, and then transported by ambulance to Huntsville Hospital. Colbert County Coroner Carlton Utley said Edwards died from multiple head injuries and chest trauma.

Thompson was driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding when his 2008 Chevy Impala left Cox Boulevard in Sheffield during the early morning hours of Jan. 10, 2016, according to the indictment.
