A 92-year-old Loachapoka man who was honored in 2014 with an exhibit at the Alabama Music Hall of Fame has died from injuries sustained in a multi-vehicle crash in Lee County.

A guitar player, music was always a part of Rowell’s life. He played with The Loachapoka Jug Band, which later became The Covered Wagon Boys, for a number of years.

“I never dreamed in all of my life that I would see a day where something like this – where the Alabama Music Hall of Fame would want to honor me,” Rowell said. “I wrote that book last year and I guess that’s what got this all started. I am so honored to even have my name mentioned with some of the people who are in that group.”
Well-known East Alabama musician Edwin "Peck" Rowell  was killed on Wednesday when a Volkswagen Jetta driven by an 18-year-old Auburn man crossed the center line and struck the Ford Ranger Rowell was riding in head on near the intersection of Richland Road on Shug Jordan Parkway in Lee County, Alabama. Rowell was airlifted to University Hospital in Birmingham, where he died of multiple injuries. The driver of the Ranger, a 40-year-old woman from Notasulga, along with the 18-year-old Auburn man sustained non-life threatening injuries. Two other vehicles were involved in the accident due to a chain reaction. We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
