Teen brother and sister killed in crash on way home from soccer practice

"They were very, very sweet, popular kids,'' principal Gayle Gober told AL.com this morning. "It's a tragic time for us. The students understandably are very upset."

The identity of the woman who died in an accident in the area of Rock Creek Road on Monday night has been identified as Erin Ashley Spain, 15, of Sylvan Springs. She was the passenger in one of the two vehicles involved.

Erin and Peyton Spain brother and sister were dearly loved by there father Chris Spain and relatives, family, and friends. They were killed in a car accident on Monday April 6th. Erin was 15 and Peyton 16. They were Hueytown High School students and on the HHS soccer team.

Friends and family wore "Donate Life" bracelets during the service to encourage others to be an organ donor. Peyton Spain was an organ donor and his liver helped save the life of a 22-year old man in Birmingham.

The crash happened about 5:30 p.m. Monday near the Rock Creek Road intersection when the driver of a northbound Nissan Altima, Peyton Christopher Spain, 17, lost control on the wet roadway. As the car crossed over into the southbound lanes, it was broadsided by an oncoming Nissan Pathfinder. His sister, Erin Ashley Spain, 15, was in the front passenger seat and was pronounced dead at the scene. Peyton was transported to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:05 a.m. Tuesday morning. The brother and sister were students at Hueytown High School and were on their way home from soccer practice when the crash occurred.

I am so deeply sadden at the lost of these two special young people. My prayers are with their family and friends. Times will be hard, but remember their smiling faces and love they shared with everyone they knew.
