Police say the man who was driving the car that struck two pedestrians in Avondale used heroin before the crash.

Driver sentenced for fatal Vine Street crash

Ryan Culver, 24, was sentenced to 13 years in prison for the death of Monisa Barnes, 43. He had pleaded guilty earlier this month to one count of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault.

Culver has been held in jail on a $1 million bond since February. He will be sentenced Dec. 18.

Firefighters had to remove Culver, Christina Swanson, 36, and Ben Thompson, 26, from the car. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt, according to a press release.
Monisa Barnes and Shalanna Wiggins were at a bus stop on Vine Street when they were struck by a car that ran a red light. Barnes was waiting for a bus, and Wiggins was getting off of a bus at the time of the crash. Barnes suffered injuries that later killed her. The driver of the car, 23-year-old Ryan Culver, allegedly ingested heroin and lost conciousness before hitting the two pedestrians. Two other people in the car were injured, and Culver suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
